He made the first series of photographs at the time of his invitation to the Biennale in Sao Paulo (2000). His work often stems from site-specific social engagement, in this case the living conditions of children in the slums. Working in a neighborhood, he made two portraits of the children. They were allowed to choose one as a present and together with the children a place to hang the portrait was found in their home. Thereupon, he would take a photo of the portrait in this environment. These photographs were show at the Biennale as a memorial document. He found the work period there too short because the mentality of the people, (melancholy and friendliness on one hand and fatalism coupled to the fact of having to live in such marginal circumstances), continued to intrigue him. That is why he returned to work there again in 2001. This serie was shown at RAM. Brian sees them as simple commentary of an outsider on the universal consequences of inequality and the coincidence of place of birth.
