WIM GIJZEN – ABOUT THE NETHERLANDS
 
A visit to all 863 municipalities of the Netherlands.

Anno 1972

Throughout 1971 and 1972 the Rotterdam artist Wim Gijzen has been working on his project called 'A visit to all 863 municipalities of the Netherlands'.

During those years he took photographs of himself in front of the name-plates of all the municipalities visited. He also sent a postcard of each municipality to the Rotterdam Kunststichting (subsidizer of the project) and took a picture of the shop where he had bought the postcard and a picture of the postbox he had posted it.

These three photograghs together with the picture and the address side of the postcard sent he presented in a frame of 34 x 26 cm. A total of 863 frames.

This work of art was exhibited in Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen (Rotterdam) , the Gemeentemuseum Den Haag and in a number of other museums in Western Europe.

As nowadays approximately half of these municipalities no longer exist on their own, the work has also gained historical value.
