Videoworks of Jeanne van Heeswijk in cooperation with other artists
The work of visual artist Jeanne van Heeswijk refers to the process of making art and participating in the public debate about art. The artist claims that art may clear the way for others for whom she wishes to create opportunities, based on her conviction that art should exceed its own limits. Van Heeswijk graduated from the Academie voor Beeldende Vorming in Tilburg and subsequently received post-academic training at the Jan van Eyck Academie in Maastricht.
The art projects of Jeanne van Heeswijk are characterized by a high social commitment. Her objective is to create new public spaces (to meet) or to transform existing spaces for that purpose. This was for instance done in Amsterdam and Ohio with the 'Face the World' project, where young people were enabled to shape their immediate surroundings. Likewise, in Vlaardingen residents of the westwijk were actively engaged in redeveloping their community with the 'Until we meet again' project. For this project she gave de Strip, a row of empty shops, a new cultural use and launched 'Buiten Beeld'. With Buiten Beeld the sculpture garden of the community was revitalized and 'Until we meet again' came to an end after more than 10 years.
As Jeanne van Heeswijk strongly believes in the power of joining a multitude of ideas, all her projects are cooperations. This also goes for her videoworks, as shown on Art Amsterdam. They were created in cooperation with others just like the above-mentioned projects in public spaces. An example is 'In the Field of Players', a cooperation with Marten Winters, other artists from various disciplines, a perfromance trio, directors of cultural institutes and the general public. Similarly, 'From the Sidelines' and 'Show us your Moves' were created in cooperation and presented at the Venice Biennale in 2003.
